Right to information act 2005
The Right to Information Act came into force on 12 October 2005 to make information held by public authorities available to all citizens, to increase transparency and credibility in the functioning of public authorities, to maintain accountability to the people and to eradicate corruption. All authorities, institutions and non-governmental organizations that come into existence or are established under the Constitution, by an Act of the Lok Sabha or the Legislative Assemblies, or by a Government notification, and which receive any form of assistance from the Government, come within the purview of this Act.
The right to inspect any work, document or record under the control of Government institutions and Government-aided institutions, to take notes or abstracts of the document or record, to take certified copies, and to take certified samples of any substance,The law also provides that any citizen has the right to obtain copies of information stored in a computer or other similar electronic system in the form of printouts, floppies, disks, tapes, video cassettes, etc. Public Information Officers and Assistant Public Information Officers have been appointed in all government offices.
